Quaint and picturesque Bathurst is the very essence of an English
village. Only 15 km from Port Alfred on the
Grahamstown road it was once the
administrative centre of the 1820 settlers and as such the capital of the
Eastern Cape of South Africa. Small but full of historic interest to visitors it is now
the centre of a pineapple, chicory and farming area. Places to visit are
the Horseshoe Bend lookout, at the Waters Meet nature reserve on the Kowie
river, Bradshaws Mill, Summerhill Farm, The Toposcope, various other
monuments and museums plus the oldest inn in South Africa.
