African Musical Instruments

'Kalimba' thumbpianos are made from Kiaat, the resonant indigenous timber also chosen by traditional southern African makers of musical instruments. Recently A.M.I. has introduced some of the attractive African hardwoods from the Knysna forest for the 'Celeste Kalimba' thumbpiano.

The 'Kalimba' thumbpianos are the firm's main export line. In addition we also export:

- African drums in three sizes modelled on those used in the northern parts of South Africa and in Zimbabwe. These are tough, small drums (up to knee high) with specially prepared cow hide heads which can be played with hand or stick.

- 'Log' Xylophones modelled on those found in many parts of Africa:
keys resting on a simple open frame are struck on both ends by two players at once, sitting opposite each other. The instrument is pentatonic and develops rythmic cooperation between players, even from a tiny age.
