The Heart of the Sunshine Coast
|
PORT ALFRED is a favourite vacation spot for South Africans. It is also a fishing village and popular retirement area. As an international tourist destination it is ideally situated by the sea but also centrally to access most of the delights of South Africa with the minimum amount of travel. With a warm sub tropical climate situated at the heart of the sunshine coast, facing the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, it is a friendly town with a thriving mix of indigenous Xhosa speaking people, Dutch Afrikaan colonists, mixed race and English Settlers. English is understood by all. Take an international flight to either Johannesburg, Cape Town or Durban. Then take a short 100 minute internal flight to either East London or Port Elizabeth. Here you can either be met, collected or self drive a prebooked hire car. A 100 minute car journey will bring you to PORT ALFRED. Historically from the 1850s to the present day, the town marks the furthest extent of European occupied land. The various traditional tribal homelands including Nelson Mandelas Xhosas and Chief Buthelezeis Zulus plus the city of Durban lie to the North East while the famous Garden Route to Cape Town lies to the West. Both Cape Town or Durban can be reached in a day by either coach, car or plane. A stunning variety of beaches, lagoons, rivers, forests, mountains and game reserves plus Grahamstown and the other historic frontier border towns are all within a two hour drive. |
