Safaris and Wildlife

There are over 30 game farms and nature reserves in the area comprising of all species including the big five (elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo and rhino). Day trips or excellent overnight stays, self drive or with accompanied viewing, by foot or 4WD to suit individual needs. Port Alfred or Kenton on Sea provide superb river, beach and deep sea fishing. Whales, dolphins, penguins, seals and sharks are a common sight for the local fishermen in their powerful ski boats. Trips are available and make a very exciting day out. Alternatively a 4WD beach adventure will take you to remote and unspoilt beaches backed by massive sand dunes and coastal forest. There are over 200 species of rare and beautiful birds for the ornithologist to spot. A canoe or hiking trail will take you from the mouth of the Kowie to the head waters deep in the Kowie reserve forest over 20 km upstream at horseshoe bend. An overnight stay at the simple wooden chalet, built for the purpose, watching soaring fish eagles and listening to the sounds of the forest by campfire, will be unforgettable.
